Amphenol's RoHS/Lead-Free Overview

Amphenol is committed to being an environmentally responsible Company. Our support of the RoHS directive is part of our overall plan to meet or exceed regulatory requirements for the handling, recycling and the reduction of hazardous materials in our products. Amphenol will comply with all applicable laws and regulations; including the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive as it pertains to our products. For product areas where Amphenol is out of scope of the legislation, Amphenol's Design for Environment initiative will guide efforts to reduce hazardous materials in new designs and products. It is important that our employees, customers and suppliers know Amphenol continues its strong commitment to protecting and improving the environment for future generations. Work on RoHS is only one of the ways where we strive to be a leader in our industry demonstrating stewardship for our environment.
The elimination of lead (Pb) makes Amphenol TCS products fully compliant with the EU RoHS Directive as Amphenol TCS products already do not intentionally contain the other 5 restricted substances (cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)) in levels above the EU RoHS Directive limits. Additionally, Amphenol TCS products do not intentionally contain these 5 restricted substances in levels above the EU RoHS Directive limits unless authorized by an exemption. Amphenol TCS products which only contain Pb in solder and plating are considered "RoHS 5/6 compliant."

Compliant Pin Exemption from RoHS

On March 16, 2005 the European Union Technical Adaptation Committee (TAC) finalized a decision which states compliant pins are exempt from RoHS by exemption. This exemption allows current Amphenol compliant pin products containing lead (Pb), to be considered RoHS compliant. Amphenol compliant pin products are also available in lead (Pb) free derivatives. Selecting a lead-free derivative will assure RoHS compliance when the exemptions are terminated. This exemption expires on 1 January 2013 and after that date may be used in spare parts for EEE placed on the market before 1 January 2013.

Amphenol TCS Position for Supplying Leaded versus Lead-free Products

Under the Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) Directive, the existing exemptions are being phased out or modified over a multi-year timeline, and new substances will be restricted. Currently, there are only two exemptions left on the list that Amphenol TCS products are affected by either directly or indirectly.

11(b). Lead used in compliant pin connector systems other than C-press connector systems. (Direct Impact)
Exemptions Expected to Expire or Change 20 September 2015
7(b). Lead in solders for servers, storage and storage array systems, network infrastructure equipment for switching, signaling, transmission as well as network management for telecommunications. (Indirect Impact as the end users determines the actual use of a product and not Amphenol TCS).
Due to the implementation of the exemptions at the end of 2012, Amphenol TCS expects the customer demand for leaded products to decline significantly. Leaded products will continue to be available to customers as long as there is demand from our customers.
